Once Buchanan Dam was finished in 1938, it became the longest multiple-arch dam in the world, stretching nearly two miles and creating a lake covering about 23,000 surface acres with a quarter-billion gallons of water when full.
The construction camp for the seven-year project remained, known today as the community of Buchanan Dam.
It lies on the south shore of Lake Buchanan along SH 29, divided by Burnet County and Llano County with a boundary down the middle of the channel linking Buchanan to Inks Lake.
Most of the area's businesses are found on SH 29, but discoveries can be made off the main route.
South, some homes are near Inks Lake State Park, where nature and outdoor opportunities abound. On Buchanan's eastern shore are several unincorporated communities and developments such as the upscale Peninsula.
Eagles nest around the lake and can often be seen on a cruise originating on the far end of the lake.
Although neither Buchanan nor Lake Travis are constant-level lakes, Buchanan does have some sandy beaches that are rare in the Highland lakes.
