TROY, Texas – Llano won a bi-district baseball championship by dominating Venus 13-3 Saturday afternoon at Troy High School.
The Yellow Jackets (13-13) will advance to round two of the Class 3A state baseball playoffs against Iowa Park, a medium-sized school near Wichita Falls.
Seldom-used pitcher Logan Bauer went the distance for the Yellow Jackets. His complete game came as a complete-but-pleasant surprise.
“I didn’t know I’d be pitching until I got here today,” Bauer, the team’s regular second baseman said. Bauer gave up only three hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking five. Two of the three runs he gave up were earned runs; one was unearned.
The pitching gem was sorely needed since ace Isaac Hutto pitched six innings in the playoff opener, a 3-0 loss Thursday night and number two starter Taylor Sorensen pitched four-and-two-thirds innings in Llano’s dramatic 5-4 win Friday night.
Bauer faced base runners in every inning but pitched out of numerous jams, aided by a double play in the fifth.
Llano hitters pounded four Venus pitchers, scoring four runs in the first inning and eight runs in the sixth.
