A crowd of more than 100 Burnet residents delivered an
unmistakable message to Burnet City Council members Wednesday about a recent
proposal to award themselves free lifetime golf at the city-owned Delaware
Springs Golf Course.
"Taxpayers should not be subsidizing recreation. It’s not
fair to the taxpayers,” Craig Lindholm, a resident of the Ranch at Delaware
Springs subdivision, told the council during a lively meeting at the Burnet
The council’s March 5 approval of the first reading of a
proposed city ordinance amendment giving them lifetime free membership at
Delaware Springs surprised citizens, Delaware Springs resident Pat McAleer said.
"There’s a perception problem here,”McAleer said. "You are
starting to act like Washington, D. C. folks.”
Council members appeared to be taken aback by the intensity
of the opposition to the free golf proposal.
"It’s been a pretty trying week for me over something that I
view as less than a gnat on a dog’s rear end,” Mayor Gary Wideman said after
telling the crowd he is unhappy about "hurtful and defaming things” that have been said about him and his
"I think we all deserve a little more respect,” Wideman

In other words Mr. Mayor....... "HURRAY FOR ME AND **** EVERYONE ELSE"! That is what you are really saying..

Mayor Wideman, "RESPECT" is EARNED- not just handed out like free golf!! If you want respect for you and yours, then treat the taxpayers of the city you SERVE, with a little respect. As mayor, you SHOULD be looking out for the best interests of the city and its residents- not your own...

"hurtful and defaming things" are a clue. Quit wasting the taxpayer's money on garbage for the rulers of the fiefdom. How about we cut the Mayor's and Council Member's pay by the amount that it would cost for a membership at the golf course? And vote them out.

So, sounds like mayor wideman doesn't think the citizens have any right to express their opinion about the council actions. He would probably like to conduct city business behind closed doors to keep the people and media out of his way and let the council just keep scamming the taxpayers and setting themselves above the peasants.

Less then a gnat on a dogs rear end! .. To some dogs that gnat could be very very annoying. Kinda of like mayors and council members who like to vote themselves FREE stuff at the taxpayers expense.

I really think this "FREEBIE" is way out of line and should be remembered at election time. THis past election was kinda weird anyway with Mr. Wideman filing at the last minute without an opponet. Maybe the schoolboard should get half price burgers at Storms, like where does it end?....c'mon you guys...THIS WAS NOT THE RIGHT THING TO DO!
