Earl Woodrow Layfield, 97, of Kingsland passed away on Jan. 31. He was born to James R. and Katie M. (Moseley) Layfield on Oct. 21, 1916 in Corsicana.
Mr. Layfield was an aircraft and rocket mechanic for Lockheed in the early days of aviation and commercial rocketry, which became the forerunner for the Gemini Manned Space Missions. He was involved with the first commercial rockets being launched at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Earl retired to Texas and enjoyed playing bridge. He was a deacon in the Kingsland Community Church. He was married to Esther for over 60 years before her passing just a month ago. He was a true Texas gentleman and a wonderful uncle and father-in-law.
Earl is survived by his son-in-law, Charles Archer of Kingsland; nephews, Ted Lockwood (Michele) of Purcellville, Va., Bruce Tatters (Michelle) of Ontario, and Doug Tatters of Ontario; nieces, Marlene Gilmour of Ontario, Priscilla Markgraf (Ken) of Sunrise Beach, Patsy Condon of Santa Maria, Calif., Gail Frederickson and her husband, Curt, of Los Altos, California, Cindy Bates (David, Beverly Lockwood and Betty Dow, all of Ontario; and foster daughters, Karren Vasquez and Patricia Burrell of California.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Archer; nephew, David Lockwood; niece, Jane Andrews; brothers and sisters, Willie Mae Layfield Brunette, Eula Estella Layfield Clark, Noel Austin Layfield, Maudie Lue Layfield Jones, Wilmont Tesson Layfield, Ruby Pearl Layfield Pemberton, Thelma Leona Layfield Jones, James Riley Layfield, Minnie Moseley Layfield Quattlebaum, Minton Moseley Layfield, Dennis Hamilton Layfield, Denton Cleburn Layfield and Mary Florence Layfield Graham.
A visitation will be held 9 a.m.–10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 at Putnam Funeral Home in Kingsland. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 at Putnam Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dick West officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet.
