Remaining bridge piece to be removed Sunday nightMarch 22, 2013, 6:45 pm by Adam Troxtell Construction workers will cut down the remaining piece of the US 281 bridge Sunday evening. Kelli Reyna, Texas Department of Transportation Public Information Officer, said crews have scheduled the work to be done then, which includes cutting the steel truss down one piece at a time using a torch. The section is the only remaining part of the steel truss of the bridge after explosives hooked up to it last Sunday failed to detonate, resulting in only part of the structure imploding in a large blast. TxDOT is warning drivers to expect lane closures starting at 7 p.m. Sunday, but those should be gone by 6 a.m. Monday morning. A second blast is planned to remove concrete piers from the old bridge that currently sit in the middle of the lake, but the date and time is still undecided. General contractor Archer Western is devising a new blast plan after the first explosion resulted in a severed fiber optic cable -- taking down phone, 911 and internet service -- and a punctured sewer line, along with scattered damage at nearby homes and businesses. |
