Free golf plan to be discussed at Burnet City Council workshop
March 27, 2013, 4:30 pm by James Walker
The council unanimously approved the first reading of a proposed city ordinance amendment that would entitle anyone who served a full term on the council to the free green fees at their March 5 meeting.
Since that first reading, a number of citizens have criticized the plan and council member Ken Graham, who had originally proposed the ordinance amendment, asked that the second reading and a possible vote on it be taken off the agenda for the most recent meeting Tuesday evening.
Mary Jane Shanes, who has filed as candidate for the city council in the May 11 municipal election, spoke during the public comment portion of Tuesday’s meeting and urged the council to reconsider its support of the ordinance.
"It saddens me that the mayor and all the city council members thought this was a good idea,” Shanes said in reading a prepared statement. "Please reconsider your stance on this proposal. I know that I am speaking not only for myself, but for many citizens of Burnet.”
Several citizens who attended Tuesday’s meeting reacted with applause to Shanes’ statement.
