Credit OK for city payments

The City of Llano will begin accepting credit cards with no fees for city payments after City Council members approved the item at a Monday meeting.
The city had not accepted credit cards previously in an effort to keep the cost of services down, according to city staff. However, Mayor Mikel Virdell and the municipal court staff requested accepting these payments.
Utility customers will be able to view their account information online, such as balances, deposits and transaction history. Once procedures are in place to accept credit card payments, online payments can be accepted for utility payments or court fines.
Council members unanimously approved accepting credit cards, but there was dissension when deciding how to pay for them.
Mayor Pro-Tem Mike Hazel made the first motion to make the fees 2.5 percent across the board, and suggested city council could return to discuss the item further if any issues arose.
"If you’re going to use a credit card, I think you should pay for it,” he said.
Alderwoman Jeanine Puryear seconded this motion, but it was negated when Aldermen Todd Keller, Bryan Miiller and Allen Hopson each opposed.
