After finding defendant James Ray Leach guilty, the jury needed fewer than 10 minutes to give him the maximum sentence of 20 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice with a $10,000 fine.
According to a statement issued by 33rd/424th Judicial District Attorney Sonny McAfee, the prosecution put on evidence that Leach choked a woman "a number of times” in Llano County throughout the evening of April 21 through the morning of April 22.
The woman was able to break away from the defendant and got treatment at Scott & White – Llano, according to the statement.
Highland Lakes Newspapers does not typically identify victims in domestic violence cases.
McAfee praised the verdict against Leach, whom his office said had been convicted of "several other violent felonies and misdemeanors in the past.”
"Everyone at Scott & White and the Llano Sheriff’s Office did an excellent job,” McAfee stated. "Their hard work and commitment to the struggle against domestic violence allowed us to give the jury all the evidence they needed to deliver justice, and the jury’s decision to hand down the maximum sentence sends a strong message about our community’s opinion of violent offenders like this defendant.”Judge Allan Garrett presided over the trial.
