Honoring local soldiers at Christmastime

With Christmas on the horizon, countless will celebrate the occasion at home with friends and family. But for the country’s military, the call to service often separates them from these comforts.
Llano County currently has 29 active service members, including two overseas in Afghanistan and Italy. As part of its "Christmas on the Homefront,” The Llano Military News Group sends care packages to soldiers for the holidays.
President Allyn Rubb, who served 12 years in the military, said these packages carry significance regardless of the sender.
"It doesn’t matter if it’s a family member sending the package or a total stranger,” he said. "It’s just a real special feeling you get inside when you know someone back home cares enough to think about you.”
The group wrapped the donated items Thursday, Dec. 5, and shipped the packages Friday.
"We shipped 11 boxes overseas and 30 boxes around the United States,” said the group’s Vice President Kristy Becker.
Personal hygiene products are the most essential, Becker said, such as shampoo, deodorant and razors. Phone cards to call loved ones are important as well.
"Most of them, especially the ones overseas, can’t just drop everything and go to a store to get everything they need,” she said.
