The Highland Lakes Republican Women provided a forum Tuesday for candidates seeking election in the March 4 primary for justice of the peace and county commissioner Precinct 4 posts.
Names were drawn from a hat and each candidate was given five minutes to speak and address prepared questions.
The Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace candidates in attendance were Sheila Steward, Lyn Jenkins and Bebe Piatt.
Piatt, who has a degree in criminal justice, said she has dedicated her adult life to helping families in crisis. She called the position the "only position I ever intend to run for.”
"I think I can bring critical insight to an office that lacks attention,” she said.
Jenkins described her history as marathon runner, and said she is well-equipped to hand the tough job. In particular, she noted her experience as a lawyer and the fact she has fought and beaten cancer three times.
"I know what it means when something happens to you and your whole world is turned upside down,” she said. Jenkins said she would like to add weekend or evening hours to help accommodate citizens.
Stewart, an 18-year resident in the county, said she has worked in the JP 1 office for 11 years and felt she has the necessary experience required to serve the citizens in this precinct.
"It’s important for this office to serve people, and as a public servant that’s what I plan to do,” she said.
