The Llano Red Top Jail is another step closer to reopening for tours after City Council members Jan. 21 approved the City of Llano co-signing a $250,000 note with the Friends of the Red Top Jail, LLC, for structural repairs.
Built in 1895, the jail has been closed to the public since Feb. 2011 when three days of hard freeze cracked the structure’s center core and compromised the foundation. The $250,000 is needed to install 32 concrete piers as well as other mechanical, electrical and plumbing requirements.
Patty Pfister introduced fellow Friends of the Red Top Jail representatives to the City Council before giving a brief history on the jail and the organization’s efforts to restore it. She described the Red Top as a "one of a kind, unique, historical landmark.”
"It’s part of the history and ambiance of Llano,” she said.
Since the group was formed in 2008, Pfister said the Friends of the Llano Red Top Jail has raised approximately $45,000 through fundraisers and donations for the jail’s interior restoration.
