Reader CommentsBuchanan was built for the purpose of holding water for release. (Buchanan lake and dam were the first completed in the Highland Lakes chain and were built primarily to store water and supply hydroelectricity. via the website)
And that is what they are doing. Before everyone goes hating on LCRA, they should take the time to learn all the facts. Talk to an employee, and have an open mind when you do. There are reasons for everything LCRA does. That water will continue to be realeased, because Buchanan will serve its purpose.
And yes, Travis is low. Today it is at 635 AMSL... Mansfield Dam was built fo hydroelectricty, and to contain flood waters to prevent destruction downstream. When it reaches a certain level, they release. It's low by 50ish feet. Also, serving its purpose. Maybe the Austin areas shouldn't be pumping out of the lakes so much to water their precious green yards. Take a look at waterfront properties. A lot of people pump from the lake to water their yards. That isn't stopping people now. They keep on watering. But that's ok.. because they want to blame LCRA. The LCRA is too powerful and needs to stop selling the people of central Texas water in amounts of 380000 acre feet as they did this year in drought times. If no rain is forecast as their weatherman has predicted why is our precious drinking water still being flushed down the river? The LCRA was set up to set up in the production of electricity at the dams in the late 30s and not to sell the tax payers of the highland lakes water at a very wasteful practice .Buchanan dam was built with US tax payers money not the LCRAs. This water belongs to the tax payers of this area.An investigation needs to be made into this multi billion entity. The people of central Texas should be fed up with their dealings. One more comment to the person that wrote the article dated August 24th. The farmers got 380000 acre feet of water this year and I know that last year the central Texas got approx. 140000 acre feet of water. What is the matter with this picture? Crops are grown in an area with no water resources and and the fields are kept flooded so they dont have to weed them and then the water is resold by the farmers. 1.5 million people in the central Texas area are blamed for wasting water when the real waste the mega amount being sent to the coastal farmers. Put the blame where it belongs. The LCRA is blame for the demise of our lakes and drinking water. |
