Llano opens football with excitement

August 08, 2012, 10:00 am by Mark Goodson

Llano opened football drills his week with 92 athletes getting accustomed to the new system under coach Craig Slaughter and his staff.

The focus was on footwork, execution and recognition of where players need to be in th offense.

"We’re excited about getting everybody out here,’’ said Slaughter, the first-year Llano coach. "I think we are looking real good learning with a lot of new coaches and a new system.’’

Slaughter said he plans on carrying about 35 athletes on the varsity with the remainder making up a junior varsity and freshman team.

"There is not a lot of separation just yet,’’ Slaughter said of the two workouts in shorts and t-shirts. "Come Friday (when the pads go on) we’ll find out a little more.’’

Llano quarterback Rhett Brooks is getting the repetitions with the first unit while sophomore Layton Rabb has looked solid, too, at quarterback.

Some of the receivers working in the mix are Isaac Hutto, Matt Center, Deven Mayne, Wil Siegenthaler and Kassidy Pitcox.

The team is also looking at several running backs in the attack. Caleb Penny is one of the candidates for the fullback role in the offense.

Llano will have its Orange-White scrimmage Friday, Aug. 10 at 8 p.m. The scrimmage will go to 9:30 p.m.
