LLANO – The 17 Llano High seniors playing their final home game would surely love to have defeated rival Burnet and keep their playoff hopes alive.
Although that didn’t happen – Burnet won 62-34 – you can’t help but be impressed with the efforts seniors Rhett Brooks, Zach Morgan, Wil Siegenthaler, Matt Center, Devin Mayne and others produced Friday night at Llano Stadium.
Brooks rushed eight times for 51 yards, caught five passes for 33 yards and executed the hardest hits of any player on the field from his defensive safety position.
Morgan, a human highlight reel on defense all season long, had another strong game. You could sense the intensity of Morgan and Brooks’ efforts even high up in the press box.
The 17 LHS seniors have one more game, and you know they’d like a win at legendary Brownwood next Friday night and go out in style.
The loss to Burnet effectively knocks Llano (1-3, 3-6) out of playoff contention. Burnett (2-3, 4-5) amassed 608 offensive yards, 431 in the air from the tight spirals of junior quarterback Derek Kiser.
Llano senior Matt Center offered a strong performance, too, coming back from a bruised neck injury suffered against Gatesville. His 20-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter brought the Yellow Jackets to within two scores with 13:04 left in the game.
But every time Llano pulled close, the Bulldogs answered with a big scoring play, casting a pall over what was an otherwise inspiring effort by the Yellow Jacket leaders.
For more on the game and next week’s trip to Brownswood High, one of the true shrines of Texas high school football, see Wednesday’s Llano County Journal.
