Happy Llano fans mobbed the Yellow Jackets Friday after their team’s 21-17 fourth quarter comeback win over Bandera.
Junior Holden Simpson came off the JV to lead a determined Llano team on a fourth quarter drive that ended with senior Carter Tatsch’s 28-yard winning touchdown run with 2:35 left in the game.
When junior Jalen Bauman intercepted a pass from Bandera quarterback Joe Rodriguez 50 seconds later the deal was sealed – and just about in Llano streamed to the field to congratulate the Jackets.
"This is just a great win,” coach Craig Slaughter said.
Senior Issac Hutto agreed.
"One of our best-ever in terms of momentum,” the acknowledged Llano leader said. "We’ve had two great wins in a row. Now we need to keep it going.”
Llano trailed 17-14 and Bandera was driving when senior Gilberto Arredondo recovered a fumble when three Yellow Jackets smashed simultaneously into Bandera’s Ishmael Macneil at midfield with 5:14 to play.
The turnover – one of four from Bandera – set up Llano’s winning drive.
Llano had 18 first downs and Bandera had 13.
Bandera had 249 yards of offense while Llano managed 234 in the closely-contested thriller.
Tatsch scored two touchdowns and rushed for 74 tough yards on 17 carries.
Bauman scored Llano’s first touchdown on a 21-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Stiles, who completed all five of his passes while leading the team in the first half.
But Simpson showed blazing speed when he took over in the second half. He raced out of trouble numerous times, rushed for 30 yards on 11 carries and hit six of 11 passes for 87 yards.
"He was nervous at first but he soon settled down and really played well,” Hutto said.
Llano and Bandera are both 2-1.
no scored the first touchdown against Bandera Friday night, but trailed the Bulldogs at the half 11-8.
