The Llano eighth grade Orange team (8-1, 5-0) defeated the Brownwood Lions last Thursday night in Llano to earn Llano’s first eighth grade district championship since 2006. In the end, Llano found a way to get it done, 20-12.
In a fashion that was the only fitting way to win this one, the Dauber defense recovered a fumble in the end zone to break a 12-12 tie in the fourth quarter which turned out to be the winning play. "Our defense has been stellar all season long so having this unit score the winning points is the only way I would have it,” coach Landon Sanderson said.
The game went back and forth all night as both teams matched scores. Ben Walling ran the ball in from one yard out in the second quarter for Llano’s first score of the game. Ian Fletcher caught a key third down pass from Walling to get the ball to the one yard line on the previous play. The PAT failed. Both defenses played like you would expect in a championship game holding the opposing offenses to minimal yards.
The Daubers found the end zone again in the third quarter to break a 6-6 tie on a run around left end by Josh Soliz from 27 yards out. The PAT failed. Llano held the Lions out of the end zone in the third quarter.
Brownwood tied the score 12-12 in the fourth quarter on an 18 yard pass play. Llano responded with their best offensive drive of the game. The drive stalled with an interception on the five yard line that set the stage for the game winning play. On the first play after the turnover, Brownwood’s quarterback mishandled the snap and Llano’s defense pounced on the ball in the end zone for a defensive touchdown. Michael Lockhart intercepted a pass from Brownwood on their last offensive possession to seal the win.
"I can’t say enough good things about this group of athletes. The thing about this group is that they are not only good players but they are great young men,” Sanderson said. "These are the type of young men you enjoy seeing be successful.”
