BELTON – Llano’s tough-to-absorb 35-26 loss to Glen Rose at shiny Crusader Stadium shouldn’t overshadow a magnificent season, especially for a group of seniors who completely turned a football program around.
In the first playoff game in three years, the Yellow Jackets won everything but the final score.
Llano outgained the Tigers, amassing 434 yards to Glen Rose’s 379. Llano ripped off 22 first downs; Glen Rose managed 14.
Three fluke plays kept the Yellow Jackets from advancing.
Llano receiver Jalen Bauman was denied a touchdown when the refs ruled he stepped out-of-bounds at the Tiger one-yard line on a 24-yard completion from LHS quarterback Layton Rabb. Replays on the mammoth video board at Crusader Stadium clearly showed Bauman hit the pylon as the buzzer sounded, ending the first half.
Even legendary former Temple High coach Bob McQueen, watching from the press box, agreed: Llano was robbed of a touchdown,
In the fourth quarter two Rabb passes were tipped straight up and intercepted, denying the Yellow Jackets of scores deep in Tiger territory.
"It’s hard to lose this way,” senior Isaac Hutto said. "We never doubted we would come back and win.”
Rabb, the all-time LHS passer, completed 18 of 34 passes for 302 yards for two touchdowns. He also rushed for 61 yards on 11 carries, scoring twice for a total of four touchdowns.
Senior Chance Ware saved his best game for his last game. He caught six passes for 131 yards and an electrifying 59-yard touchdown that gave Llano an early 7-0 lead.
The 21 seniors on the 2013 Yellow Jackets turned a program around in two seasons, ending a 10-game losing streak and making the playoffs - the school’s first in three years.
