Gatesville unleashes 3-point storm

It’s hard to imagine anybody shooting three-point shots as well as Gatesville did Friday night at Llano High School.
The visiting Hornets (1-0, 10-12) connected on eight of 10 three-point shots in the first half (75 percent) and 13 of 19 (68 percent) for the entire game to win the District 8-3A opener 64-42. Llano is 0-1 and 13-10.
Gatesville hit its first six shots from behind the three-point arc to take a 20-7 lead after one quarter. The Hornets led 34-15 at halftime behind the deadly shooting of 5-10 sophomore Justin Massey, whose 20 points led all scorers. Eighteen of Massey’s 20 points came on three-point shots.
The two Gatesville major college prospects also had fine games. Senior Danny Byrd, a 6-3 wide receiver on GHS’ 13-1 football team, scored 18 points and left the impression he could score any time he wanted. But 6-1 senior Tobias Moore, usually the team’s leading scorer, was limited to seven points by the LHS defense.
