Llano's Morgan stands tall for Jackets

October 19, 2012, 11:30 pm by Jim Goodson

LAMPASAS – Llano’s Zach Morgan dropped Lampasas quarterback Kleg Kennedy for a 10-yard loss on a fourth-and-five play with three seconds left in the game to seal a 20-13 victory for the Yellow Jackets Friday night.

The win keeps Llano (3-4, 1-1) alive in the District 8-3A race.

Llano’s defense swaggered onto the field after halftime and took control of the game.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 13-6 through two quarters but outscored Lampasas 14-0 in the second half.

It was the second week in a row for Llano to face the wing-T offense.

Liberty Hill rushed for 443 yards last week and Lampasas rolled up 158 yards in the first half Friday night. But the Yellow Jackets defense yielded only 77 rushing yards in the second half and hung two goose eggs on the hometown Badgers. Lampasas falls to 2-5 and 0-2.

Running back Rhett Brooks scored the deciding touchdown for Llano on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter. Brooks winning touchdown came after he had caught a 28-yard pass from quarterback Layton Rabb and dove into the end zone for an apparent score.

But the refs ruled Brooks' knee touched the ground at the three. So the determined senior simply bulled into the end zone on the next play for what proved to be the winning touchdown.

Rabb completed 11 of 22 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown to receiver Matt Center. Brooks also had a 2-yard run for the first touchdown of the game.

The entire defense played well in the second half and was helped by the addition of sophomore Jalen Bauman, who had several key stops.
