Gatesville remains unbeaten

October 26, 2012, 11:00 pm by Jim Goodson

LLANO –Gatesville’s 41-7 win over Llano Friday night likely ends the Yellow Jackets chances for the District 8-3A title. Playoff possibilities, however, still exist since three teams will qualify for postseason play.
Wins over Burnet Nov. 2 and Brownwood Nov. 9 would put Llano (3-5, 1-2) in the playoffs.
And that’s very possible for the Yellow Jackets, who keep battling in every game, even if the temperature drops to 41-degrees in a biting northwesterly wind. Despite being outmanned the Yellow Jackets never gave anything less than maximum effort.
They only scored once – only a beautiful 35-yard pass by quarterback Layton Rabb to a wide open Wil Siegenthaler in the second quarter – and the LHS defense could not contain undefeated Gatesville (8-0, 3-0).
The surprising Hornets were only 4-6 last year but have jelled in 2012 behind the superb quarterbacking of senior Cole Edmiston, who completed 19 of 25 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 62 yards and one touchdown.
Or he could hand the ball to lightning quick runner Jake Kee, who 69 yards and one touchdown are deceiving since he had two long runs negated by penalties.
Gatesville rolled to 472 offensive yards and 20 first downs while Llano countered with 164 yards and 17 first downs.
One measure of Llano’s toughness: tight end Matt Center was knocked out of the hard-hitting game twice, but came back to play after the first injury. His second came on a brutal hit after catching a Rabb pass. The first hit knocked his helmet off then another  Hornet defender hit him helmet-to-head, sending Center sprawling.
You’ve never 1,200 people so quiet, but Center finally got up and walked off the field with only a sprained neck and not a concussion.
He vowed to be ready for Burnet next week, reflecting the attitude of the 2012 Yellow Jackets.
