Billy J. Guthrie Dec. 9, 1935 ~ Nov. 27, 2012November 16, 2012, 9:00 am by Staff Reports
He was proud of his serving his country during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged he returned home and started his employment with LCRA. After five years, he left there to pursue a profession in carpentry, which he had loved doing since he was fifteen. He was happiest when he had a hammer in his hand. During his career, he worked for Darrell Leech Builders, Lydia Construction Company during the time of the building of Darrell K. Royal stadium, Faulkner Construction Company, and numerous real estate companies including Billy Joe Fox Real Estate, John Simmons Real Estate, Barnes and Jones Real Estate. He married the love of life, Betty Smith, on Aug. 6, 1960. He is survived by his wife; sons Robert Guthrie and wife Diane, Thomas Guthrie and wife Eva, and Kootsey Guthrie; daughters Brenda Buckner and husband Pat, and Carol Marcon and husband Mike; brother Danny Guthrie and wife Charlotte; mother-in-law Mavis Smith; seventeen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members. Quote from Dad; "If I can build it with a fishing pole, I will do it, or otherwise I am retired.” The family would like to give special thanks to the medical staff at Seton Highland Lakes Hospice. A memorial service will be held at the Assembly of God Church at 807 E. White St. in Burnet on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 3 p.m. with Leslie Hart officiating. Friends can sign the on line register book at edgarfh.com. Reader CommentsRest in peace Billy Joe and thank you for making me feel more like a son rather than a son-in-law. You will always have a special place in my heart for the rest of my days here on earth. God bless the Guthrie family. My thoughts and prayers to all of the family. I grew up a few blocks down the street and remember him always making everyone laugh. He raised some wonderful human beings too. Rest in peace Mr. Guthrie. |
