John Cleburne Humphrey Sept. 21, 1952 ~ Feb. 27, 2013
John Cleburne Humphrey, Jr, played the game of his life a few days ago, paring every hole, after being in the rough and hitting into every sand strap. The odds were enormous, but with his giant smile, John knew what the goal was in the end. He was challenged at several turns but did not waiver, his victory came on Wednesday, Feb. 27, with his wife at his side, at the noon hour. Just in time to do his favorite thing, Eat! John was born with a smile that would light up a room, on Sept. 21, 1952 in San Benito, Texas. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. John was known for his radiant smile and his kindness throughout his life. He was an avid golfer, operating a golf store in the Rio Grande valley for over 30 years. John married his loving wife, Mary, whom he was devoted to, on Dec. 15, 1995. Not many people had a passion for golf like John, his golfing friends at Delaware Springs, tried to convince him that he did not have to hit the ball from the tee box to the green on every hole. John was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed his help. He made many friends out of his passion for a fresh cut lawn; in fact, he mowed for several of his new found friends at Delaware Springs. Sitting on his back porch watching deer and having a cool beverage will be a fond memory in the hearts of many that have grown to love and care about John. John was a friend to all, he enjoyed hunting with his brother and nephews and his new hunting buddies in the hill country. John was a blessing to his wife Mary for over 17 years; his parents, John Cleburne, Jr. and Virginia Gamble Humphrey; his brother, Steve and his wife Barbara; his sister, Bonnie and her husband Lonnie; his daughter, Lynn Bowers and her husband Reed, grandchildren Sydney, Reed, Ryan, Reis; his daughter, Vanessa Kana and her husband Eric, grandchildren Jenna and Briann, and his son, Jason Humphrey, grandchild Aurora; his stepson, Matthew Koschtial and grandchild Kendell; along with numerous loving other family and many friends. John always told Mary that he felt very blessed by her, his children, grandchildren and his friends in his life. The Humphrey family would like to offer special love to the chemo nurses at Seton Williamson for their special care and attention they showed John of the last few months. |
