Betty Slaughter May 18, 1927 ~ April 25, 2013

She graduated from Harlingen High School in 1945 and attended Trinity University in San Antonio. She was a Red Cross volunteer in the 1950s and 1960s and worked the Mississippi floods. Betty served as the Red Cross Disaster Chairman for Cameron County, taught Red Cross first aid and was a water safety instructor for many years in Harlingen.
She managed Texas Econ Services, an insurance premium finance company, and was secretary/bookkeeper for Harlingen ISD, Amber Construction, Faulkner Construction and Calcasieu Lumber Co. before retiring in 1971. She was also a founding member of the Spicewood Community Library and continued to volunteer there for 7 years.
Betty was preceded in death by the loves of her life her husband of 58 years Charles, their 1-year old son Clifton Ray, her parents and her brother Billy Ray Tatroe.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Val and Jimmy McCandless; their children Michael, Scott and wife Neecie, Amber and husband John; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; son and daughter-in-law Charles and Janice Slaughter; their children Christopher and Matthew. Betty also leaves behind nieces, nephews and many good friends.
A memorial service for Betty will be held at 1p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the Clements-Wilcox Chapel. Following the service a reception will be held at the Spicewood Community Library.
