Marilyn was born Dec. 14, 1924 to Roy A. Spencer and Georgia Pearle Austin of Atkins, Ark. As a child she loved exploring the Ozark Mountains of northwest Arkansas and spending many days climbing Mount Petit Jean. She graduated valedictorian of Atkins High School and went on to have a career as an administrative assistant, including working for Humble Oil Company in Houston. She met Richard (Dick) Belas in Houston on the bus to work one day and they were married in Aug. 1957. During her life, she raised two daughters and traveled and lived all over the United States. Marilyn was an avid reader, quick-witted, and loved to travel. Those who met Marilyn were easily drawn to her light-hearted laugh and gentle character. It was easy to spend an afternoon chatting with Marilyn. She was more than just a kind and sweet woman, she was someone who quickly earned people’s affection, and she left behind only happy memories for those lucky to have known her.
Marilyn is survived by her daughter Karen Mohan and son-in-law Tim Mohan of Burnet, grandson Brett Marmon and wife Melissa of Houston, grandson Nathan Mohan and wife Jan of Albuquerque, N.M., granddaughter Audrey Mohan and husband Tyler Cunningham of Colorado Springs, Colo., and granddaughter Lindsey Mohan and husband John Hawkins of Burnet. She also cherished her time with three great-grandsons Ethan Cunningham, Daniel Hawkins and Charlie Hawkins.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; her daughter, Mary Jo Marmon; and her brother Lanny Spencer.
Services were held on Monday, May 20, at Chapel of the Oaks at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
