Bruce Wayne Harkey, 62, was found guilty in the deaths of his stepmother, 85-year-old Bonnie Harkey and her caretaker, Karen Johnson. The trial was prosecuted by 33rd/424th District Attorney Sonny McAfee and Assistant District Attorney Anthony Dodson.

Just over two years ago, Bonnie Harkey was found in a shallow grave in the bottom of a drainage ditch in LeonCounty, 200 miles from her home in San Saba County. Johnson was found dead by her 10-year-old son in Harkey’s home.

McAfee said that Bruce Harkey paid Bonnie Harkey’s grandson, Carl Wade Pressley, 30, $100 in advance to kill the elderly woman over the weekend of March 25, 2012. Pressley killed Johnson when he took his grandmother from her home.

“He broke into the house, and when he saw Karen he compressed her chest and she died,” McAfee said. “He took his grandmother and drove to LeonCounty to a creek where he hit her over the head with a stick and held her head underwater until she died.”
